- Fractional brings fractional CMO hiring to Southeast Asia.
- The company matches top marketing leaders with startups.
- Fractional’s model is gaining traction among founders and VC firms.
Oliver Lo, former vice president of marketing for Surge, Peak XV’s scale-up program, observed that many startups struggle without proper marketing guidance.
In response, he co-founded Fractional, a collective of chief marketing officers (CMOs), alongside fellow Southeast Asia-based marketing leaders Sophie Jokelson and Rana Saha.
The Singapore-based company curates the region’s top marketing leaders and matches them with startups, introducing Silicon Valley’s “fractional hiring” trend to Southeast Asia.
Experienced founders bring expertise to the table
The three founding partners of Fractional bring nearly 50 years of combined experience working for companies like Grab, Uber, and MediaCom.
They recognized that Southeast Asia’s relatively young tech ecosystem, coupled with smaller funding rounds compared to mature markets like the US, leads to a lack of affordable CMOs with deep operator experience for early-stage startups.
Fractional aims to bridge this gap by providing experienced marketers an alternative where they can work on interesting problems without sacrificing pay.
Growing interest amid economic downturn
Fractional is already working with business founders and VC firms, and the team is witnessing increased interest in their model as the economic downturn makes startup fundraising increasingly scarce.
Jokelson believes that companies will seek more sustainable ways to grow into the next cycle. Fractional’s approach to hiring experienced CMOs on a short-term or part-time basis could be a valuable solution for startups looking to navigate the challenging landscape.
