Potential factory in the archipelago?
Apple CEO Tim Cook is set to visit Indonesia around April 20, sparking speculation about the tech giant’s potential investments in the country.
According to Budi Arie Setiadi, the Minister of Communication and Information, Cook’s visit may be related to Apple’s plans to establish a factory in Indonesia.
Setiadi stated, “All possibilities are there, we will see how the approach will be later,” as reported by local media outlet Bisnis. However, the specific details of Apple’s investment plans remain uncertain and will be subject to further negotiations during Cook’s visit.
Cook’s cooking up something big
While Apple previously invested $44 million in Indonesia in 2017 to construct the Apple Academy in BSD City, Banten province, the company’s market share in the country currently stands at a modest 10%, according to StatCounter data as of February 2024.
Despite the dominance of Android smartphones from brands like Samsung, Oppo, and Vivo in Indonesia’s market, IDC’s report noted that sales of higher-priced smartphones – a segment largely controlled by Apple and Samsung – experienced a significant 78% year-over-year growth in 2023.
With Cook’s impending visit, Apple appears poised to strengthen its presence in the Indonesian market, potentially through the establishment of a manufacturing facility, which could mark a significant milestone in the company’s expansion into Southeast Asia.
