Techzi started in October 2023 and it has been a terrific ride for almost 15 months.
But now we are pausing.
Why are we pausing?
We had a hypothesis that there was an opportunity to provide free tech news in Southeast Asia kind of like TechCrunch does for the US.
And we still think there is a niche in doing that but it is a lot harder to tackle than we had expected.
Part of the problem in our point of view is timing. Social media is far more powerful today than it was when media sites like Techcrunch and Tech in Asia got their initial traction.
These days it is even harder to be a publisher. Not because of other media players, but rather because your competition is everyone that is posting on LinkedIn and X.com.
And the fact that social media doesn’t really reward publishers like us, but rather these platforms even penalize publishers to some extent.
What do we mean when we say we are pausing?
Basically, it means that we will no longer create new content and will no longer send our daily newsletters.
But our website, www.techzi.co, and our social media channels will all stay up.
Basically, we are leaving things in a kind of frozen state in case we want to come back.
Will we be back?
So for now the most honest answer would be that we’re not sure.
We want to see how this AI game plays out. We see that creating high quality content is getting easier and faster by the month and therefore there might come a day where we say… “It’s time to jump back in the game!”
Or on the other hand we may conclude that being this type of media publisher is just not attractive and we will never be back.
It’s kind of like at a concert when the musician leaves the stage and everyone is thinking… “Will they be back for their encore?” 🙂
