- Jagat sparks 10 million users in 9 months.
- The app reveals friends and happenings to coordinate meetups.
- Founders target youth wanting tangible relationships beyond scrolling.
Jagat, a social networking app focused on real-world meetups, has reached over 10 million users just 9 months after launch.
Targets mainstream social media
The Singapore and Indonesia-based startup aims to get people off their phones and connect face-to-face.
Jagat features an interactive map showing friends’ locations and nearby events and activities.
Co-founded by Jagat President Barry Beagen and CEO Loy Xing Zhe, the app is positioned as an antidote to passive mainstream social media scrolling.
“We were both excited about exploring the world and places and finding spontaneous ways to meet new friends,” Beagen told TechCrunch.
Upcoming Exciting Features
The social map shows real-time friend locations and status updates to coordinate in-person hangouts. Users can also discover local happenings and people with similar interests.
Upcoming features include community event organizing and exploring global groups beyond your city. “We want to be about people, not posts,” said Beagen, taking direct aim at the likes of Facebook.
Though similar to the shuttered app Zenly, Jagat focuses squarely on fueled real-world connections versus online entertainment.
Around 85% of its Gen-Z-dominated user base check Jagat daily to coordinate social activities.
Jagat atop charts
Since its launch, Jagat has ranked atop the charts in Japan, Taiwan, Vietnam, Spain, France, and its Singapore headquarters.
Beagen cited the startup’s universal appeal in building for the next generation.
Jagat closed undisclosed Series A funding in October as it continues prioritizing social features over media and content.
Beagen stated today’s youth want more from social apps than endless scrolling.
Vision and potential
Jagat aims to spark genuine social interactivity locally and worldwide by revealing friend proximity and happenings.
The 10 million user milestone validates this vision for a map-based future of social networking.
And Beagen sees potential for Jagat to power creators and businesses by localizing digital connections.
Its sights are set on serving the next generation’s demand for socially-driven discovery and real relationships beyond the screen.
