Uri Levine, Co-founder of Waze, recently said something pretty controversial on Lenny’s Podcast…

…his advice to founders that have recently hired someone was to ask themselves 30-days after hiring them:

“If I know what I know today… would I still have hired this person?
And if not.. you should immediately fire this person.”

And when I heard it… I was both agreeing and disagreeing pretty vehemently.

AGREEING because yes… i completely agree that you will know a ton more about someone you recently hired within 30 days and should part ways very quickly if it’s not working out.

DISAGREEING because… in my view you should have not hired them as an employee in the first place, but rather done a paid work trial that allowed them to not leave their previous job.

I think it’s pretty irresponsible to convince someone to leave a job where they might have been happy, and then let them go a few weeks later. Especially when paid work trials provide an alternative that is better for both parties.
