- Google redefined its cultural values
- Pichai introduced six new principles
- The company modernizes its workplace approach
The Evolution of Google DNA
Sundar Pichai acknowledged the need to sharpen Google’s cultural identity during Wednesday’s all-hands meeting. The term “Googleyness,” once a broad concept used in hiring decisions, received a much-needed makeover to reflect the company’s current direction.
Breaking Down The New Framework
The refreshed definition centers on six core principles: Mission First, Make Helpful Things, Be Bold & Responsible, Stay Scrappy, Hustle & Have Fun, and Team Google.
This marks a significant shift from previous interpretations, including those outlined in Laszlo Bock’s 2015 book “Work Rules.”
Culture Meets Strategy
The move represents Google’s broader efforts to modernize its workplace culture. The company previously modified its hiring guidelines to separate “Googleyness” from general culture fit, addressing diversity concerns in its workforce.
