- Lazada offered $888 training support for retrenched non-union employees.
- The offer, negotiated by NTUC, requires joining a union.
- Affected staff below VP level received additional two weeks’ pay.
In a move to support retrenched Lazada employees in Singapore who were not part of a local union, the e-commerce giant has offered a severance package of S$1,200 (US$888) for training purposes.
This offer was negotiated by the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) and will be paid by August 31.
Turning lemons into lemonade
To receive the training support, former employees must first join the Food, Drinks and Allied Workers Union (FDAWU), an affiliate of NTUC, as per the documents obtained by The Business Times. Those already affiliated with unions received a separate settlement earlier this year.
Affected employees below the vice president level were also offered an additional two weeks’ salary. Briefings regarding the offer took place on May 20 and 21, involving both Lazada Singapore and Lazada Southeast Asia employees.
NTUC secretary-general Ng Chee Meng announced the union’s efforts to “close matters” with the affected employees on Facebook.
A helping hand to pivot and thrive
Initially dissatisfied with Lazada’s retrenchment offer to union workers, NTUC had secured an enhanced support package and a training fund after subsequent engagements.
Negotiations for non-union workers between FDAWU and Lazada continued, with no stated timeline for the discussions.
