Leadership Shuffle

Amazon has named Samir Kumar, a 25-year company veteran, as the new head of its India consumer business.

This strategic move comes amid intensifying competition in the crucial Indian market, following the unexpected departure of previous leader Manish Tiwary last month.

Expanded Responsibilities

Kumar will assume the role of country manager for India, adding to his existing oversight of Amazon’s consumer operations in the Middle East, South Africa, and Turkey.

This appointment underscores Amazon’s commitment to its Indian operations, despite mounting challenges.

Market Challenges

Despite significant investments, Amazon faces stiff competition in India’s smaller cities and towns. Local rivals Flipkart and Meesho have gained stronger footholds, outpacing Amazon in mobile app usage.

Additionally, quick-commerce companies like BlinkIt, Swiggy, and Zepto are reshaping urban markets with rapid delivery services – an area Amazon has yet to explore in India.
