With the introduction of Siri alongside the iPhone 4S in 2011, it was the first time you could literally talk to your device.
There were plenty of “ooohhhhs” and “aaahhhhs” – it was like witnessing a magic trick.
But, spoiler alert! Siri later got left behind when Google Assistant and Alexa entered the Assistant Idol competition, understanding a lot more of what their human overlords commanded.
In 2019, Google Assistant got an upgrade that allowed it to function even without an internet connection.
Siri, not wanting to be outdone, followed suit in 2021.
Then in 2022, everything changed with the introduction of ChatGPT. It’s like that nerd classmate who knows everything in every class, and people kept swarming him for homework.
Fast forward to January 2024, Samsung and Google teamed up to announce an on-device generative AI, giving us a glimpse into the future of AI capabilities in mobile phones.
Rumor has it that Apple is set to catch up with on-device AI capabilities this year. Will we finally see Super Siri?
This on-device generative AI means our phones can now learn and adapt to our preferences and behaviors directly on the device, without needing to send data back and forth to the cloud – you know, for privacy reasons.
It’s like having a personal assistant who not only knows what coffee you like but also remembers how you like to respond to your messages and can create personalized workout routines based on your health data.
Every line of code we write, every app we develop, and every idea we bring to life contributes to this rapidly advancing landscape.
So until next time, maybe add a “please” to your AI prompts.
It doesn’t hurt to stay on their good side – you know, just in case they do start conquering the world, they’ll remember you’ve been kind!
