Hire for humanity, not just smarts“AI will commoditize our skills, but not our souls”

In the rapidly evolving world of artificial intelligence (AI), workers face mounting concerns about competing with machines for jobs.

According to Zack Kass, a former leader at OpenAI, our inherent “human” qualities may be the key to thriving in this AI-driven era.

Hire for humanity, not just smarts

As AI becomes proficient in coding, writing, and data analysis, Kass emphasizes the importance of leaning into areas where humans still outpace AI, such as critical thinking.

Kass suggests that in the coming years, it will be crucial to “hire lawyers not for how fast they are, but for how well they understand a problem really uniquely.”

Additionally, he stresses the significance of embracing qualities that make individuals likable and desirable colleagues for other humans to work with.

“AI will commoditize our skills, but not our souls”

In Kass’s words, “AI is going to commoditize most of our knowledge and many of our skills.”

Therefore, our “immutable human qualities” like “courage, vision, wisdom, empathy” will become increasingly valuable assets.

These qualities could also set individuals apart as AI takes over tasks for workers at all levels.

Studies have already shown that AI is bound to be an equalizer in the workplace. Kass suggests that workers should emphasize their personal qualities, asking rhetorically, “Why would anyone hire ‘assholes’ in a world where everyone is smart?”

A workforce comprised of likable individuals can also positively impact a company’s bottom line, as people with work friends are not only more likely to stay in their jobs but are also more productive, engaged, happier, and healthier.
