Dyson, the renowned British technology company, has announced the upcoming launch of CleanTrace, an augmented reality (AR) feature for its Gen5detect vacuum system.

The innovative technology, set to be released in June, aims to revolutionize the way users approach vacuuming their homes.

Bringing robot vacuum mapping to manual cleaning

Inspired by the methodical cleaning approach of Dyson’s robot vacuums, CleanTrace utilizes AR technology to create a purple overlay on users’ phone screens, displaying the path the vacuum has taken.

The objective is to ensure that users cover the entire room, turning it completely purple, rather than relying solely on their eyes.

Charlie Park, Dyson’s VP of engineering, emphasizes the importance of knowing where the vacuum has been and where it has yet to go, a feature that sets robot vacuums apart from human cleaners.

Tackling the efficiency gap in cleaning

Dyson’s research reveals that consumers often overestimate the amount of time they spend vacuuming, data showing that around 80% of cleaning sessions last less than 10 minutes, despite people claiming to vacuum for an average of 24 minutes per session.

CleanTrace aims to address this disconnect by making the vacuuming process more efficient and potentially saving users time.

The introduction of this technology also raises the question of whether vacuum gamification could be the next step in the evolution of household cleaning.
