- Physics Wallah raises $210M at $2.8B valuation
- The edtech startup thrives on affordable, scalable education
- It bucks the trend of struggling Indian edtech firms
From YouTube to Unicorn
Physics Wallah, an Indian edtech startup, has raised $210 million in a Series B round, valuing the company at $2.8 billion. This funding, led by Hornbill Capital, comes despite the current tough environment for edtech firms in India.
The company’s journey from a YouTube channel to a unicorn showcases its unique approach to education.
Affordable Education at Scale
Founded by Alakh Pandey, Physics Wallah serves 46 million students across five languages. The startup’s success lies in its affordability, offering courses for as low as $50 per year.
It caters to a wide range of students, from third grade to those preparing for competitive exams. The company reported revenue of $96.2 million in the year ended March 2023, expecting its most profitable year in 2025.
Bucking the Trend
Physics Wallah’s growth contrasts sharply the broader Indian edtech sector’s struggles. Major players like Unacademy and Byju’s have faced significant challenges, including job cuts and potential bankruptcy.
However, Physics Wallah remains optimistic, citing a thriving hybrid model that combines online and offline learning to meet student needs.
