Type One Energy has announced a $53.5 million funding extension, bringing its total seed funding to $82.5 million.

Led by Bill Gates’s Breakthrough Energy Ventures, the investment aims to accelerate the development of Type One’s stellarator fusion reactor, a design resembling a cronut-shaped twist on the traditional tokamak.

Racing against climate change

CEO Christofer Mowry emphasized the urgency of their mission, citing the rapid growth of coal plants in China.

Type One is leveraging partnerships, including access to the Summit supercomputer at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, to fine-tune their reactor design by 2030.

The company plans to build a prototype reactor called Infinity One, which will validate key design aspects of their pilot plant.

Type One’s goal is to finalize the pilot design by 2030 and license it to another company for construction, potentially bringing fusion power to market at an unprecedented pace.
