Shrimp farming is being transformed digitally

Jakarta-based shrimp cultivation startup JALA raised $13.1 million in Series A funding to expand its digital farming solutions across Indonesia.

The round was led by Intudo Ventures, the only Indonesia-focused VC firm, with participation from SMDV and existing backers Mirova and Meloy Fund.

JALA provides an end-to-end ecosystem for shrimp farmers, including data analytics, water quality monitoring devices, farm assistance services, financing, and market access.

Its app has registered over 20,000 users and monitors 35,300 ponds.

Sustainability is the foundation

CEO Liris Maduningtyas said the funding will help “amplify efforts to pave a sustainable future for Indonesia’s shrimp industry” by equipping smallholder farmers with technological and financial support.

Intudo’s Patrick Yip sees a major growth opportunity as “the world’s fourth-largest shrimp producer.”

He said JALA’s solutions create economic value by increasing yields and leading to more sustainable practices.

Collaboration and growth potential

The company also partners with Conservation International on climate-smart shrimp models combining intensified farming with mangrove restoration.

Beyond improving productivity, JALA facilitates farmer access to markets and fair, prompt harvest payments.

With remote Indonesian smallholders in focus, JALA aims to tackle day-to-day challenges by providing guidance and specialized support alongside its app-enabled monitoring and financing tools.beehiiv
