Transitions to country-based tech structure

Singapore-based TreeDots, an online marketplace for surplus produce, recently announced the layoff of 13 employees from its tech and R&D departments during a town hall meeting on March 1.

The company, which operates in Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia, employs over 200 people worldwide.

Co-founder Tyler Jong explained that the job cuts were part of a transition from a group-based tech team to a country-based structure.

The layoffs affected 10 employees from the Indonesia team and three from Singapore, Myanmar, and India. Jong emphasized that this restructuring aligns with TreeDots’ next phase, which involves experimenting with different approaches in various markets.

He also mentioned that the team structure may evolve in the future, and the company may rehire for specific parts of the business.

TreeDots’ future goals

Founded in 2017 by Tyler Jong, Nicholas Lim, and Jiacai Lau, TreeDots has made significant strides in reducing food waste.

In addition to its online marketplace, the company provides logistics services to help transport fruit, vegetables, meat, and other food products. TreeDots’ most recent funding round in 2021 secured US$11 million in a series A round co-led by Amasia and East Ventures.

Despite shutting down its B2C group-buying service in 2022 due to challenges in synergies with its B2B business, TreeDots reported saving more than 2,500 tonnes of food waste by March 2022.

This achievement is particularly significant considering that Singapore generated around 813,000 tonnes of food waste that year.

Looking ahead, TreeDots has set an ambitious goal of saving up to 2 million tonnes of food waste by 2025.
