🙌 Welcome back to Startup Wednesdays, featuring #VC, #founders & #operators here in South-East Asia. For this week, we have Fandy Cendrajaya, Founding Partner at Kopital Ventures

đź’ What inspired you to start Kopital Ventures?

The inspiration behind starting Kopital Ventures can be attributed to a convergence of factors: firstly, luck played a role as we sourced and invested in numerous exceptional founders, enhancing our track record.

Secondly, we identified a market void where many established funds had moved on to raise larger amounts, rendering them less suitable for
pre-seed/seed stage investments.

Lastly, our passion lies in working with entrepreneurs and helping them navigate from 0 to 1.

đź’ How has your experience working with Edward Tirtanata shaped your perspective?

Although I have not had the opportunity to work directly with Ed, he has been both a role model and a friend for some time.

One of the most remarkable aspects of Ed’s character is his unwavering commitment to his values despite the attention and accolades he receives.

Witnessing Ed’s personal growth has been incredibly inspiring, instilling in me the confidence to dream bigger and reach greater heights.

đź’ What has been the biggest challenge in starting a new fund?

Honestly, establishing a fund has been an incredibly steep learning journey. The multitude of challenges encountered has made me realize that being a top notch fund manager entails more than just fundraising or spotting promising deals.

It is also about the efficiency of your internal processes, the quality of investor relations and reporting, the ability to maintain and deepen relationships with everyone in the ecosystem, the fund’s branding, managing portfolio companies as they continue to expand, building the team…and many more.

đź’ Where do you see Indonesia’s startup landscape in the next 5 years?

We can anticipate the emergence of a few more unicorns. More foreign founders will also enter Indonesia which will compel local founders to raise their bar.

It is a very exciting time to be in the ecosystem as founder quality continues to rise over time.

đź’ How do you stay up-to-date with the latest developments in startups?

Catching up with various people from the industry and building genuine relationship with them. The saying that your network is truly your net worth couldn’t be more accurate.

đź’ If you could start Kopital again, what would you do differently?

Absolutely nothing. Establishing Kopital Ventures has been one of the most arduous and demanding endeavors I’ve undertaken, yet it’s also been the most fulfilling.

Not a day passes without encountering a new learning experience. I consider myself incredibly lucky to have been granted this opportunity.
