- Uber launched “Store Pickup” in India, allowing users to schedule pickups and deliveries.
- The service has limitations like weight and cost caps.
- Store Pickup marks Uber’s latest local delivery expansion after its US debut in 2023.
Uber is quietly expanding its reach in India with a new feature called “Store Pickup.” This service allows users to schedule pickups and deliveries of prepaid items from local stores directly through the Uber app. Similar to ride tracking, users can monitor their deliveries in real time.
Marking Uber’s latest foray into local delivery
The launch marks Uber’s latest foray into local delivery, following its US debut in December 2023. It enters a competitive landscape with established Indian players like Dunzo, Rapido, and Swiggy offering similar services.
However, it underlines Uber’s ambition to solidify its presence in the daily lives of Indian consumers.
It has limitations
While convenient, Store Pickup comes with limitations. Items must weigh under 11 lbs (5 kg) and cost less than $60 (₹5,000), not requiring ID or payment verification at pickup. Notably, alcohol, medication, drugs, firearms, and illegal items are prohibited.
Customers initiate deliveries by entering specifics like store name, address, and pickup instructions. Uploading proof of purchase and order confirmation helps ensure smooth fulfillment.
Caters to specific local stores
Store Pickup complements Uber’s existing Connect feature for package delivery but caters specifically to local stores.
This launch follows last year’s US rollout of Store Pickup across 1,700 cities. Additionally, Uber previously offered UberRUSH for same-day local deliveries in some markets before discontinuing it in 2018.
Whether Store Pickup replicates UberRUSH’s fate or carves its niche in India remains to be seen.
