I had a long conversation with Marc Randolph, the co-founder of Netflix.
3 powerful takeaways:
1. You need to sprint early in the race.
Marc used the analogy of a triathlon start to describe his perspective on your early career years. Everyone is diving into the water and it’s a total mess. You can get caught in the crowds and have a lot of trouble breaking free.
But, he discovered, if you sprint out of the start, you can find your way to clear water. If you do that, you set yourself up well for the entire race.
This is a brilliant framing for your life and career. In your 20s, you may need to sprint to find that clear water and establish yourself for the long race to come.
2. Everything great starts with incredible curiosity.
The best things in life come from embracing the feeling of newness, of discomfort.
Seek out the experiences that make you feel like a beginner. Dive in with genuine interest and you will uncover the greatest rewards.
3. Balance is a matter of perspective.
When you seek balance in life, know that the zoomed out balance is much more important than the zoomed in balance.
If you try to have a perfect balance on a micro daily level, you may well be disappointed or anxious, as the vagaries of life and work can disrupt that.
If you instead focus on having a perfect balance on a macro monthly level, you’ll feel recharged and fulfilled.
Sprint, then rest.
