- A SpaceX rocket toppled over returning from a mission due to rough seas.
- The fallen rocket has completed 19 flights since 2019, lofting over 860 satellites.
- Though now scrap metal, SpaceX continues its swift launch cadence, prepping new flights even after the loss.
A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket met an ignominious fate just after Christmas when turbulent seas caused the booster to tip over during transport back to port.
Lacked Updated Stabilization Gear
The booster lacked updated stabilization gear that helps newer models stay balanced on landing ships. Combined with rough waves, the conditions created uneven stresses that ultimately saw the veteran craft slide.“We will make lemonade out of lemons and learn as much as possible,” wrote SpaceX executive Kiko Dontchev of the setback.
A Pretty Prolific Rocket
The fallen rocket completed its 19th and final mission on December 23rd after first flying in 2019. It lofted over 860 satellites and even transported astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley to begin manned flights anew. While the toppled booster is now scrap, SpaceX aims to salvage and study its usable components.
