X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk, has introduced video and audio calling capabilities to Android users following a recent app update. The new feature allows users to place direct calls to other users from within the app.
Launched a new call settings
The rollout to Android comes after X first launched video calling for iOS users back in October 2023. However, only paid X subscribers can initiate calls, while all users can receive them.
Users can control call settings and permissions in their Privacy and Safety menu, including toggling calling on or off. They can also select which groups – like their contacts, mutual followers, or verified profiles – are allowed to call them.
Aiming to be an “everything app”
Video calling is just the latest addition as X aims to become an “everything app.” But the platform faces challenges, with reports of advertisers leaving amid controversies around Musk’s management.
As new features roll out, rebuilding user and marketer trust remains an ongoing struggle.
