  • TikTok is testing allowing uploads up to 30 minutes long, a major increase from the 10-minute limit.
  • This shift could transform content hosted and better compete with YouTube for long-form video.
  • But it’s unclear if the test will fully roll out amid regulatory worries over TikTok’s growth.

TikTok has been spotted testing a significant expansion of its video length limits, indicating the short-form video platform aims to compete more directly with long-form leader YouTube.

According to social media consultant Matt Navarra, TikTok’s iOS beta app now allows uploading videos up to 30 minutes long, a major leap from the previous 10-minute constraint.

Transforming content and viewer experience

If implemented for all users, this shift would transform the types of content hosted on TikTok. Creators would have more flexibility for content like cooking shows, beauty tutorials, and comedy sketches. It may also enable posting full-length TV show episodes rather than multi-part videos.

This could increase the platform’s appeal to networks and studios. However, not all viewers come to TikTok for longer videos. The company has introduced features to aid watching longer uploads, like landscape mode and video fast-forwarding.

Will the test survive?

As with any testing initiative, it remains unclear whether the 30-minute capability will graduate beyond the trial stage to full rollout.

TikTok has incrementally expanded ceilings in the past, from 15 seconds initially to one minute and later three minutes. The continual upward march suggests an intent to court professional creators and compete with other video giants, such as YouTube.

TikTok’s ascent has already worried competitors enough that regulatory obstacles or bans have been enacted in some countries. Further encroaching on YouTube’s territory may spur additional barriers, but TikTok appears committed to securing its position as a top video platform across all lengths.

For now, its slow expansion strategy aims to walk that competitive line while still keeping its core user base satisfied.
