Filters Fizzle Out

Meta has announced the shutdown of its augmented reality platform, Spark AR Studio, effective January 14, 2025.

This move will discontinue third-party AR effects on Instagram and Facebook, leaving only Meta’s in-house creations available to users.

The company cites a shift in priorities towards products that will “best serve the future needs of consumers and business customers” as the reason behind this decision.

AR Creators Feel the Burn

The news has sent shockwaves through the AR creator community, many of whom rely on Spark AR Studio for their livelihoods.

Creators like Lita Heifetz, who builds over half of her filters using Spark, are now scrambling to adapt their businesses.

The shutdown poses a significant challenge for brands and marketers who have embraced AR effects to boost engagement on Meta’s platforms.

Snapchat Poised to Capture the Market?

As Meta steps back from custom AR effects, competitors like Snapchat and TikTok stand to benefit.

These platforms offer robust developer tools and reward programs for AR creators, potentially attracting talent displaced by Meta’s decision.

The AR community is already discussing a shift towards other platforms, Snapchat in particular, as they seek new homes for their creative endeavors.
