AI education extravaganza

Following a $1.7 billion pledge in Indonesia, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has committed a staggering $2.2 billion investment to bolster Malaysia’s AI infrastructure. This marks the tech titan’s largest single investment in the country to date.

Part of the strategy involves offering AI education to a whopping 200,000 Malaysians, transforming the southern state of Johor into an AI hub.

Microsoft also plans to launch a regional data center in Thailand, aiming to provide AI training to 2.5 million individuals across Southeast Asia.

Southeast Asia’s golden opportunity

Amid ongoing tensions between the US and China, Southeast Asia has emerged as a key battleground for American tech giants.

Last month, Apple CEO Tim Cook embarked on a regional tour, announcing investments in Singapore, Indonesia, and Vietnam. Consulting firm Kearney predicts AI could supercharge Southeast Asia’s economy by a staggering $1 trillion by 2030.

Malaysia stands to gain nearly $115 billion from this AI-fueled growth, while Indonesia could capture a whopping $366 billion.
