- Amazon tests tram deliveries in Frankfurt
- Combines vans, rail, bikes
- Part of green logistics push
All Aboard the Delivery Express
Amazon is taking an innovative approach to last-mile deliveries in Frankfurt, Germany. The e-commerce giant has launched a pilot program that combines electric vans, trams, and cargo bikes to transport packages across the city.
This unique blend of road and rail transport showcases Amazon’s commitment to exploring eco-friendly delivery solutions.
A Green Track Record
The Frankfurt pilot aligns perfectly Amazon’s broader green initiatives.
Earlier this year, the company inked a deal to use rail networks for transporting goods between fulfillment centers in Germany and Italy. These moves come as Amazon faces pressure to improve its environmental impact, though it recently backtracked on its ambitious goal of making half its shipments carbon neutral by 2030.
Riding the Rails of Innovation
Amazon isn’t the first to experiment tram-based deliveries in Europe. Dresden’s CarGoTram operated for two decades, Deutsche Post DHL tested a similar concept in Schwerin. However, Amazon’s pilot, part of Frankfurt’s Gütertram research project, could pave the way for more sustainable urban logistics solutions in the future.
