Apple just dropped the release date for the Vision Pro.
Unfortunately, no word yet on when it’s releasing outside the US shores but it’s definitely something to keep an eye on as mobile developers, especially for iOS developers.
Apple has been rolling out Augmented Reality SDKs for years now, and the Vision Pro is the culmination of all this tech.
As an iOS developer, the visionOS platform opens up a whole new dimension, allowing for more immersive experiences.
It uses the same technologies we’ve been working with to build iOS apps, which means even Flutter might support visionOS in the future.
While we can’t say for sure if visionOS will become the leading platform for AR/VR apps, Apple’s track record on building leading platforms from the iPad to the Apple Watch is pretty stellar.
Imagine coding with unlimited screens. Your workspace isn’t confined to a couple of monitors anymore. You could have your code, simulator, chat, and other windows floating around you in a virtual space. It’s like being Tony Stark in your own coding lab – minus the Iron Man suit.
Some notable concerns though. How long will the comfort level hold up especially for long coding sessions.
Despite these concerns, it’s a good idea to learn the new platform, and perhaps start some fun projects to play around with as we await its arrival.
Though we’re still far from replacing our smartphones with these headsets, this gives us a glimpse of what’s to come in the future of mobile computing.
Cheers to innovation and a future of mobile computing! (or in Apple’s words, spatial computing)
