Apple’s strategy to expand the market

Apple has initiated early-stage discussions with Chinese tech giant Baidu regarding the potential integration of the latter’s generative AI technology into Apple’s products in China, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal.

This move is part of Apple’s broader strategy to enhance its AI features and comply with Chinese regulations, which require government pre-approval for AI models.

Partnering with Baidu could save Apple the challenge of developing AI services in the Chinese language, especially considering local rivals’ advantage in this area, analysts told WSJ.

However, the sources noted that the discussions with Baidu are not yet conclusive, and it remains unclear whether Apple has approached other Chinese AI firms.

Competing in the Chinese market

A successful partnership with Baidu could help Apple better compete in the Chinese market against companies like Huawei.

Despite Apple’s strong grip on the Asian country’s smartphone market in recent years, many local customers have been switching to Huawei, which launched its flagship Mate 60 Pro last year amidst US sanctions, garnering applause from state media.

Apple is also focusing on expanding its research and development efforts in China, planning a new lab dedicated to product innovation and preparing for the rollout of its Vision Pro headset in the country soon.
