Edtech startup hits a snag
Refocus, an edtech company operating in the Philippines and Indonesia, is facing a lawsuit from 843 of its students in Indonesia. The students are demanding approximately US$990,000 for material losses and US$619,000 for non-material damages.
The students allege that despite paying for services, they did not receive full access to educational content or the employment guarantees promised by Refocus, which trains individuals in IT skills and helps them find tech jobs.
Revival or ruin? the courtroom drama awaits
While Refocus suspended operations in the Philippines in July 2023 due to complaints about its sales and marketing tactics, the company abruptly halted operations in Indonesia two months later, leaving many students with significant financial losses ranging from approximately US$1,114 to US$1,485.
Although Refocus posted a message on its Indonesia website claiming to be “on the path to revival” despite “significant financial challenges,” the company faces a critical juncture. If Refocus fails to respond to the court’s final summons, the court may rule in favor of the plaintiffs by default.
