- Tokopedia undergoes leadership change after TikTok merger completion.
- New president director from ByteDance as board shifts control.
- Tokopedia seems positioned for growth with TikTok steering strategic direction.
Indonesian e-commerce giant Tokopedia has appointed a new president director, Vonny Ernita Susamto, following the recent completion of its merger deal with TikTok. Susamto joined Tokopedia from ByteDance, where she oversaw category management.
New strategic directions
The disclosure also reveals shifts in Tokopedia’s board makeup after TikTok officially took a controlling stake in the combined TikTok-Tokopedia entity earlier this week.
Wilfred Halim, ByteDance’s global lead for e-commerce risk control and security, is now president commissioner.
Future for Tokopedia with TikTok
While major personnel changes often cause uncertainty, Tokopedia appears positioned for continued growth. Despite handing over ownership control per the merger agreement, Tokopedia’s parent company, GoTo Group, retains an e-commerce services fee tied to Tokopedia’s expansion.
This ensures an ongoing revenue stream even as GoTo lets TikTok drive the strategic direction.
The leadership transition comes at an opportune time after GoTo announced a positively adjusted EBITDA in Q4 2023, reflecting momentum across the group’s online travel and e-commerce segments.
With TikTok now at the helm of Tokopedia and GoTo demonstrating improving profitability, Tokopedia seems poised to thrive under its new stewards focused on capturing Indonesia’s rapidly digitalizing consumer markets.
