- Platform partners with luxury brands to combat counterfeits.
- Move taps into booming preloved fashion, $49.3B global market.
TikTok Shop, the social commerce marketplace, is expanding its secondhand luxury category to the U.K., following its successful six-month run in the U.S.
The new offering allows U.K. customers to purchase pre-owned high-end clothing, designer handbags, and accessories without leaving the TikTok app.
U.K. shoppers, get ready to splurge
Five U.K. brands, including Sellier, Luxe Collective, Sign of the Times, HardlyEverWornIt, and Break Archive, are available at launch. Counterfeits remain the biggest challenge in the online luxury resale market, and TikTok Shop is no exception.
The platform has an anti-counterfeit policy that guarantees a full refund if a seller is proven to have sold a fake product. TikTok is also in talks with luxury goods company LVMH to help crack down on counterfeiting.
In the U.S., all secondhand brands on TikTok Shop are required to have certificates from third-party authenticators like Entrupy and Real Authentication.
Tapping into the thriving secondhand market
TikTok Shop’s expansion into the secondhand luxury category is a strategic move to capitalize on the growing market of preowned luxury items.
The secondhand luxury market is a multibillion-dollar business, with an estimated $49.3 billion worth of secondhand designer items sold worldwide in 2023.
This move aligns with the increasing trend of people embracing preloved fashion, evident from the 1.2 billion views garnered by the hashtag #secondhandfashion on TikTok.
