- Amazon’s job cuts hit Singapore executives.
- Layoffs impacted Amazon Ads, AWS regional leaders.
- Despite cuts, Amazon to hire for targeted needs.
The recent wave of job cuts by US ecommerce giant Amazon has rippled across the Asia Pacific, impacting executive staff based in Singapore.
Among those affected are Sunil Yadav, formerly Amazon Ads’ head of commercial for Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Southeast Asia, and Elliot Renton, the sales leader for the Asia Pacific media, entertainment, and sports industry team at Amazon Web Services (AWS).
Tight-lipped on departures
While Yadav confirmed his departure from Amazon, he declined to provide further details. An Amazon spokesperson reassured that despite the layoffs, the company would continue hiring for “targeted areas based on customer needs.”
This development follows Amazon’s decision to wind down its original productions for Prime Video, its streaming platform, in Southeast Asia. The company aims to shift its focus toward licensing content for the region.
Cloud dominance remains steadfast
According to a 2022 study by market analyst Canalys, AWS leads the Asia Pacific cloud market with an estimated 32% market share, followed by Microsoft Azure at 26% and Google Cloud at 9%.
Although Amazon Ads has maintained a relatively low profile in the region, the company announced plans to expand its advertising presence in Asia back in 2019.
