- Mark Zuckerberg says Meta’s Quest 3 VR headset beats Apple’s Vision Pro on price.
- But Meta’s dominance today doesn’t guarantee future success as Apple leverages ecosystem strengths.
- These opening battles kick off a long war between tech titans in emerging extended realities.
After trying out Apple’s new Vision Pro headset, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg shared his thoughts in an Instagram video this week. He gave the edge to Meta’s latest virtual reality device, the Quest 3, saying “I don’t just think that Quest is the better value, I think Quest is the better product, period.”
Quest 3’s advantages
Zuckerberg highlighted several advantages of the Quest 3 over Apple’s offering, including lower weight, lack of wires, wider field of view, and physical controller options.
He also noted the Quest’s more immersive content library and significantly lower price point at around one-seventh the cost. However, Zuckerberg conceded the Vision Pro’s strengths as an entertainment device.
Meta’s dominance in headset sales & technology
He also chose not to address Apple’s inherent ecosystem and developer advantages that may allow it to gain ground over time. For now, Meta retains dominance in headset sales and technology.
As Zuckerberg stated, Meta has spent years building virtual reality products. But in this emerging market, Apple’s deep resources present a long-term threat.
Still in the opening stages
Though Meta may hold the edge today, the headset wars are still in their opening stages.
Zuckerberg’s comments suggest Meta is taking Apple’s ambitious entry seriously amidst a feeling of relief at the Quest 3’s favorable product reviews so far.
