- Cocomelon became a top Netflix show with over 600 million viewing hours.
- The popular and soothing toddler content bests Stranger Things.
- Streaming services compete for the youngest viewers with catchy children’s programming.
New data reveals that the beloved toddler program “Cocomelon” has shuffled into the upper echelon of Netflix viewership.
600m+ hours of viewing
The brightly colored, soothingly repetitive nursery rhyme video collection was viewed for over 600 million hours in early 2023 – making it Netflix’s 4th most-watched title.
Yes, 601 million hours. Of animated babies singing “Wheels on the Bus.” That tops the viewership of all four seasons of the global smash hit “Stranger Things” over the same period.
Unexpected hit
Originally a YouTube channel, Cocomelon and its endless loop of “Baby Shark Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo” was acquired in 2021 for $3 billion by children’s media giant Moonbug.
Moonbug also owns fellow preschool favorites Blippi and Morphle, which began life as online videos.
So, while Cocomelon may not have the plot twists of a prestige drama, its simplicity appeals to the juice box set – and judging by the numbers, business is booming.
Toddlers are the ultimate binge viewers
After all, this is the 4th most subscribed YouTube channel worldwide. Toddlers know how to binge-view.
Even for adults, the songs prove hard to dislodge from memory banks years later. “Cocomelon” will continue as streaming providers vie for the youngest eyeballs.
