Teaching blues to blockchain bucks

Derek Lim, a former English teacher in Singapore, traded his chalk for cryptocurrencies and never looked back.

Disillusioned by the education system’s rigidity, Lim dove into blockchain technology, eventually turning his crypto trading hobby into a seven-figure portfolio.

His success caught the attention of major players in the industry, leading to roles at Bybit and Tech in Asia.

Dubai’s digital gold rush

Now, Lim is set to lead a Web3 startup studio for Ghaf Studios in Dubai, joining the UAE’s ambitious push to become a global crypto hub.

The country’s initiatives, including new regulations and dedicated tech zones, are attracting talent from around the world.

Sheikh Al Mualla bin Ahmed Al Mualla, heading Ghaf Studios, sees Lim’s unique background in sociology helping to navigate the complex social dynamics of blockchain ecosystems.

Debugging in the desert

The UAE’s strategy of importing foreign talent to bolster its tech sector is nothing new, but the Web3 boom is accelerating this trend.

Firms like Ghaf are competing for top developers, particularly from Asia, offering attractive salaries and compelling visions.

Despite the challenges, the UAE remains committed to its goal of attracting over 500 tech companies and creating thousands of jobs in the next five years, positioning itself at the forefront of the global Web3 revolution.
