- Elon Musk’s xAI open-sources Grok, a 314 billion parameter AI model, on GitHub.
- The move, aligning with Musk’s recent comments, aims to foster AI innovation and collaboration.
- Tech giants like Meta and Google have also released AI models to the public domain.
Elon Musk’s xAI has taken a significant step in the world of artificial intelligence by open-sourcing the base code of its Grok AI model.
The 314 billion parameter Mixture-of-Expert model, described by the company in a blog post, is now available on GitHub for developers and researchers to explore.
A new model under Apache License 2.0
The open-sourced Grok model, however, does not include the training code, as xAI noted that the model was not tuned for any specific application, such as conversational AI.
The company revealed that Grok-1 was trained on a “custom” stack without providing further details. Nonetheless, the model is licensed under the Apache License 2.0, which allows for commercial use cases.
AI innovation through open-source initiative
The move to open-source the Grok model aligns with Musk’s recent comments on the X platform (formerly Twitter), where he expressed xAI’s intention to release the model this week.
The open-source initiative follows similar actions by tech giants like Meta, Google, and others, who have also released various AI models to the public domain.
This collaborative approach aims to foster innovation and advancement in the field of artificial intelligence.
