The Fish Farmer, a Singapore-based aquaculture company, has turned to sensors and artificial intelligence to optimize its fish farming practices.

Malcolm Ong, founder and CEO, emphasizes the importance of innovative solutions to overcome the challenges of limited space and rising costs in Singapore’s aquaculture industry.

Keeping fish stocks in check

The company’s IoT farm management software, developed in collaboration with Metropolitan Wireless International (MWI), utilizes solar-powered sensors to monitor various aspects of the farm environment.

An AI-powered fish counting application enables accurate inventory tracking, replacing the time-consuming and error-prone manual counting process.

Additionally, an upgraded water quality monitoring sensor alerts employees to changes in water conditions, allowing for swift action to prevent fish stock depletion.

Schooling for sustainability

By leveraging these technologies, The Fish Farmer has significantly reduced the frequency of incidents resulting in fish stock losses. The data-driven approach enables better farm management and faster response times to potential issues.

Moreover, the automation of certain tasks has allowed employees to focus on higher-value responsibilities, such as pursuing further education in aquaculture management and technology at Temasek Polytechnic.

Ong believes that combining traditional aquaculture experience with the right technology is key to increasing fish production and ensuring the sustainability of the industry.
