- OpenAI CEO Sam Altman joins Giving Pledge, committing to donate majority of his wealth.
- Altman and partner focus on supporting technology that creates abundance for people.
- Altman’s diverse investments landed him on billionaires lists.
Sam Altman, the billionaire CEO of OpenAI, has recently signed the Giving Pledge along with his partner, Oliver Mulherin.
The pledge, created by Bill Gates, Melinda French Gates, and Warren Buffett, asks the world’s wealthiest individuals to publicly commit to donating the majority of their wealth to philanthropy during their lifetimes or in their wills.
In their pledge letter, Altman and Mulherin expressed immense gratitude for the hard work and dedication of others that allowed them to reach their current position.
Focusing on technology for abundance
The couple plans to focus their giving on supporting technology that helps create abundance for people, enabling them to “build the scaffolding even higher.”
Altman joins a list of well-known pledge signatories, including MacKenzie Scott, Reid Hoffman, Marc Benioff, Elon Musk, Larry Ellison, and Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan.
A billionaire’s portfolio
Despite famously stating that he has no equity in OpenAI, Altman debuted on the Forbes and Bloomberg billionaires lists earlier this year.
His wealth is attributed to a wide range of investments, including stakes in companies like Reddit, Stripe, nuclear energy startup Helion, and longevity biotech startup Retro Biosciences.
Altman also has stakes in YC funds and has been growing his real estate portfolio.
