Indonesia is joining the global trend of proactively regulating artificial intelligence (AI), with the deputy minister of communication and information, Nezar Patria, announcing that the ministry is preparing comprehensive AI regulations to be launched by the end of 2024.

The move follows the ASEAN’s launch of its own AI governance framework last month, which aims to establish common principles and best practices for trustworthy AI solutions among its 10-member bloc.

Sanctions targeting AI misuse

According to the ministry of communication and information, the upcoming regulations will primarily focus on setting out sanctions targeting AI misuse.

These sanctions will relate to existing laws, including those on personal data protection, copyright, and electronic information and transactions.

Patria added that the ministry plans to collaborate with UNESCO to ensure adherence to global standards.

Building on previous AI initiatives

Indonesia’s minister of communication and information, Budi Arie Setiadi, previously issued a circular letter in December 2023 containing guidelines around AI ethics.

Additionally, the country’s national innovation research agency had released a national AI strategy in August 2020. The latest announcement builds on these initiatives, demonstrating Indonesia’s commitment to fostering a responsible and trustworthy AI ecosystem.

The announcement comes amidst growing interest in AI across the region, with Singapore emerging as a potential AI leader in Southeast Asia, backed by a US$742 million investment.

Singapore’s nonprofit organization AI Singapore has already developed Sea-Lion, the first open-source large language model (LLM) specifically focused on Southeast Asian languages and contexts.

Indonesia and other ASEAN nations will continue to develop their AI regulations and strategies to become a significant player in the global AI landscape.
