Generative AI at CES 2023
Getty Images announced Generative AI by iStock at CES 2023 – an AI service creating original artwork by learning from the stock media giant’s visual libraries. Getty claims algorithms guard against reproducing protected IP while providing legal backing if issues emerge.
Affordable AI with legal safeguards
For $15 per 100 generated images, the Nvidia-powered tool in 75 languages can modify or create new illustrations. “Our main goal…is to provide an easy and affordable AI option without fear that legally protected [material] could end up in [customer] work,” said iStock Chief Product Officer Grant Farhall.
The launch comes amid fierce debates around AI potentially infringing on copyrights by closely replicating protected material in training. Getty is suing Stability AI in the U.K. for allegedly scraping Getty’s images and metadata.
Addressing legal concerns
Seeking to address legitimacy concerns in enabling generative art, Getty Images’ new offering provides $10,000 in legal coverage per licensed visual. The policy ostensibly shields customers from liability for any AI-powered creations later deemed in violation.
As lawsuits mount from artists alleging AI mimicry, Getty’s blend of creation latitude and insulation from fallout signals a model for firms to monetize ambient intelligence for commercial use cases sustainably.
But thorny questions around infringement continue embroiling tech’s fastest-moving field.
