Canva, the popular graphic design platform, has acquired Leonardo.ai, a generative AI content startup, for an undisclosed sum.

The deal brings Leonardo.ai‘s 120 employees, including the executive team, under Canva’s umbrella. This move significantly bolsters Canva’s AI capabilities, particularly in image generation and model customization.

From gaming to global design

Founded in 2022, Leonardo.ai initially focused on video game asset creation but quickly expanded its scope.

Leonardo.ai now offers a range of AI-powered tools for industries such as fashion, advertising, and architecture.

Its innovative features, like the Live Canvas tool, allow users to create photorealistic images through a combination of text prompts and sketches.

Canva’s AI-driven future

This acquisition, Canva’s eighth overall and second this year, underscores the company’s commitment to expanding its AI offerings.

Canva plans to integrate Leonardo.ai‘s technology into its Magic Studio suite, potentially introducing new generative AI capabilities.

Their idea comes amid Canva’s preparation for a possible IPO, highlighting the company’s strategic focus on AI-powered growth.
