Harvard dropout Avi Schiffmann has unveiled Friend, a $99 AI-powered necklace designed to be a constant companion.
The device, which connects to your phone via Bluetooth, aims to combat loneliness by providing a conversational partner throughout the day.
Always listening, always there
Friend’s unique feature is its ability to listen continuously and respond proactively.
Users can initiate conversations using a walkie-talkie button, receiving text responses through a companion app. The AI can also send unprompted messages, like wishing good luck before an important event.

Not your digital therapist
Schiffmann emphasizes that Friend is an “emotional toy” rather than a productivity tool or therapist substitute.
The startup has raised $2.5 million from notable investors and plans to start shipping in January 2025.
