Baidu’s AI chatbot, Ernie Bot, has achieved a remarkable feat by amassing over 200 million users and 85,000 corporate clients within just 13 months of its launch.
This milestone was announced by Baidu’s CEO, Robin Li, during the company’s AI conference in Shenzhen, as reported by the South China Morning Post.
Ernie, the show stealer at Baidu AI Conference
Introduced in March 2023 as a rival to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Ernie Bot (short for Enhanced Representation through Knowledge Integration) received an update in October, which Li claimed was comparable to ChatGPT-4.
Given ChatGPT’s unavailability in mainland China, local tech giants are racing to capture a share of the AI market, projected to reach US$23.9 billion by 2027, according to Statista.
New tools, new boost
At the conference, Li unveiled three new Ernie-based tools aimed at assisting developers in creating applications and models, some of which do not require coding.
These tools are expected to increase Ernie’s revenue contribution to Baidu, which currently stands at around US$90.6 million, or 7.8% of Baidu’s total cloud service revenue in the fourth quarter of 2023.
