- ByteDance will generate over $110 billion in revenue this year.
- Propelled by TikTok, it may surpass Tencent as China’s top internet company.
- Though ambitious abroad, ByteDance faces domestic competition and regulatory hurdles.
According to those familiar with internal figures, Chinese internet dynamo ByteDance is poised to generate over $110 billion in sales this year – potentially surpassing gaming leader Tencent in revenue.
Propelled by viral video apps TikTok and Douyin, ByteDance saw sales rocket 40% annually in 2022’s second quarter. Now the world’s most valuable private startup at $225 billion, it may take the revenue crown from Tencent.
Surpassing Tencent
Tencent, valued at $280 billion, expects around $86 billion in 2023 revenue.
While 80% of ByteDance’s business remains domestic today, international expansion of TikTok plus major investments abroad like its impending $1.5 billion Tokopedia stake displays its global ambitions.
Moves to boost profitability
ByteDance posted a 79% jump in 2022 EBITDA, per the Financial Times, including trimming its gaming division Nuverse.
This resulted in over 1,000 layoffs, showing not all units are scaling evenly as dynamic creator platforms like TikTok propel growth.
If current trends endure, dynamic creator platforms like TikTok could propel this young colossus to the apex of Chinese tech giants as video engagement revolutionizes the sector.
However, stiff competition from Tencent and regulatory resistance in key markets will test whether ByteDance’s meteoric rise plateaus or enters a new stratosphere.
