The first glimpse of Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto VI has already stolen a YouTube record despite an early leak.
The trailer racked up 85 million views within 24 hours of Rockstar posting the official version Tuesday morning. Check it out here.
It surpassed a popular video from YouTube phenom MrBeast, who previously held the record for most YouTube views, excluding music videos over the same period.
Leak and damage control
Rockstar had planned the trailer reveal for Tuesday before leaks forced an early release on Monday.
“Our trailer has leaked, so please watch the real thing,” the company posted while getting bootleg copies pulled down. Even the damage control message itself scored 82 million views and counting.
Record-breaking numbers
The blockbuster numbers underscore 10 years of mounting hype for the sequel to 2013’s GTA V — still the second highest-selling video game next to Minecraft.
Its predecessor also set records, hauling over $800 million on launch day alone, with over 11 million copies sold.
GTA VI has a high bar to clear, but judging by the trailer’s smash debut, it’s gearing up to steal the crown as the fastest entertainment release in history.
Enthralled fans
The robbery and getaway mayhem scenes have already enthralled fans awaiting the 2025 game. The next big question is whether it can eclipse K-pop group BTS’ 108 million views for “Butter” as the #1 24-hour YouTube video.
For now, Rockstar can revel in the early achievement while YouTuber MrBeast sticks to less criminal stunts — despite what GTA’s explosive action might inspire.
