Emmett Shear has taken over as the new leader of OpenAI’s leadership team

OpenAI, the buzzy AI startup that Microsoft has invested over $10 billion in, has a new CEO after founder Sam Altman abruptly departed the role over the weekend. Stepping in is Emmett Shear, co-founder of Twitch, who takes over leadership of OpenAI during a tense time, given the rocky transition and Microsoft’s outsized influence.

Ironically, Shear may find working closely with Microsoft uncomfortable based on past comments. In a historical blog post, Shear shared that interning at Microsoft felt like “getting the payment for a little chunk of my soul in the mail” with each paycheck. The context and timeframe of his Microsoft tenure are unclear.

Nonetheless, the eyebrow-raising remark adds an awkward wrinkle as Shear attempts to smooth things with OpenAI’s biggest financial backer. Altman’s rapid dismissal reportedly blindsided Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. As OpenAI’s largest investor, Microsoft’s relationship with OpenAI’s leadership is pivotal.

On the plus side, Shear has signaled a cautious approach to developing AI responsibly. In a separate blog post, he wrote he was “in favor of slowing down” AI progress to ensure safety. This measured perspective could resonate with those worried about AI’s risks.

As the tech world processes the jarring changes atop OpenAI, all eyes turn to Shear and his ability to steer the ship and placate Microsoft. Mending ties with his new company’s biggest partner while upholding his principles poses an immediate test.
