Tech Startup Trims Team to Stay Competitive

Calendly, the popular scheduling platform, announced significant organizational changes on Wednesday, cutting approximately 70 employees across engineering, customer experience, marketing, and billing departments.

The layoffs represent about 13% of the company’s total workforce, marking a strategic restructuring aimed at maintaining competitiveness in a rapidly evolving tech landscape.

Leadership Takes Responsibility for Tough Decisions

CEO Tope Awotona personally addressed the team through an internal memo, emphasizing the difficulty of the decision. The company plans to handle the transitions carefully, providing impacted employees individual meetings and ensuring respectful communication.

Awotona acknowledged the contributions of departing team members, highlighting their hard work during this challenging process.

Market Pressures Drive Organizational Shifts

The reduction comes amid increasing competition from tech giants like Google and Microsoft, which have integrated similar scheduling features into their platforms. Calendly, founded in 2013 and previously valued at $3 billion, has grown to over 20 million users globally.

This latest restructuring signals the company’s adaptive strategy in maintaining its market position through focused operational efficiency.
