AI image generator goes tangible

Midjourney, the AI image-generating powerhouse, has announced its foray into hardware development.

The company, which has reportedly generated over $200 million in revenue without venture capital backing, is establishing a new hardware team based in San Francisco.

Hints of mixed reality?

While specific details remain under wraps, Midjourney’s recent hiring of Ahmad Abbas, a former Apple Vision Pro engineer, suggests a possible focus on mixed reality technology.

CEO David Holz’s background in motion-tracking hardware from his Leap Motion days further fuels speculation about the company’s hardware direction.

Expanding horizons

Despite ongoing legal challenges regarding its AI training methods, Midjourney continues to innovate.

The company is developing AI models for video and 3D generation, which could potentially tie into its hardware ambitions.

Midjourney’s compact team of fewer than 100 people is set to tackle multiple hardware projects simultaneously.
