Growing pains and potential

India’s Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) is shaking up the ecommerce landscape.

Launched in 2021, this government initiative aims to break the Amazon-Flipkart duopoly by creating an open network where buyers can connect to sellers across multiple platforms.

Despite boasting 535,000 sellers, ONDC faces challenges. Delivery issues and commission complications have led some businesses to discontinue participation.

However, success stories like Freshco HyperBazaar, earning $179 daily via ONDC, highlight its potential.

Southeast Asian ambitions

ONDC has sparked interest in Singapore, Indonesia, and Malaysia. Yet, experts advise focusing on India before expanding.

The network’s unique model needs time to mature and overcome hurdles, much like Amazon’s decades-long journey to profitability in India.
