The Decline of Google’s Culture: A Scattering Critique by an Ex-Employee

A former long-time Google employee has written a scathing public letter criticizing the tech giant’s culture and leadership. Ian Hickson, who worked at Google for 18 25 years before resigning this month, accused the company of losing its early transparent and ambitious culture.

In a post on his blog titled “The Decline of Google’s Culture,” Hickson lamented the evaporation of open communication and risk-taking experimentation that marked Google’s early days.

He blamed CEO Sundar Pichai for a “lack of visionary leadership,” spreading bureaucracy, and “inept middle management.”

Lamenting the Loss: Hickson’s Criticism of Google’s Evolution

“Morale is at an all-time low,” wrote Hickson. “If you talk to therapists in the Bay Area, they will tell you all their Google clients are unhappy.”

The ex-Googler reserved some of his harshest words for the recent wave of layoffs, which he called “short-sighted” and damaging company culture. Over 12,000 employees have lost jobs this year as Google tries to cut costs.

A Culture in Crisis: Hickson’s View on Morale, Layoffs, and Future Talent

While a single critic may not represent views held company-wide, Hickson’s letter is circulating internally and finding sympathy among some current and former staffers.

He warned that the company may struggle to attract the talent needed to correct course if culture erodes.

“The deterioration of Google’s culture will eventually become irreversible,” wrote Hickson, “because the kinds of people whom you need to act as moral compass are the same kinds of people who don’t join an organization without a moral compass.”

Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the letter.
