In a ground-breaking move, Singapore’s Huber’s Butchery has become the world’s first retailer to offer lab-grown meat.
This innovative product, dubbed Good Meat 3, is the result of an exclusive partnership with Good Meat, a subsidiary of the US-based foodtech firm Eat Just.
Clucking breakthrough!
While predominantly composed of plant protein, Good Meat 3 boasts a mere 3% cultivated animal cells.
Despite its modest animal cell count, the lab-made chicken has received positive feedback on taste, texture, and appearance during testing.
However, this cutting-edge culinary experience comes at a premium, priced at S$7.20 (US$5.34) for a 120-gram frozen portion.
Protein pioneers, wallet woes
Elevated prices have historically deterred consumers from embracing plant-based meats. Nevertheless, this launch signifies a crucial milestone for the cultured meat sector, which has grappled with declining capital investments.
Last year, the global industry raised US$226 million, a substantial decrease from the previous year’s US$922 million.
Companies like Eat Just face immense pressure to enhance cost efficiency and profitability.
For Eat Just, this challenge compounds legal and financial hurdles, including a temporary suspension of operations in Singapore.
Nonetheless, the company aims to produce more chicken-alternative products this year than in all previous years combined.
