Amazon Web Services (AWS) unveiled bold plans to inject an additional S$12 billion (US$8.8 billion) into Singapore’s cloud infrastructure from 2024 to 2028, effectively doubling its investment.
Last year alone, the tech behemoth’s cloud computing arm poured US$8.5 billion into the city-state’s digital landscape.
GDP tsunami, job wave headed for the red dot
An AWS study forecasts this mammoth investment could swell Singapore’s gross domestic product by US$17.5 billion by 2028 and generate approximately 12,300 full-time equivalent local jobs yearly.
Entities like Grab, Singlife, Synapxe, and the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore catch AWS’ service waves.
Priscilla Chong, AWS Singapore’s country manager, stated, “This investment will create a ripple effect across Singapore by increasing economic growth and cloud adoption.”
AWS seeds AI garden in Singapore
Riding the generative AI wave, AWS collaborates with public organizations to develop such tech, including AI Singapore’s Sea-Lion language model, GovTech Singapore’s Analytics.gov data platform, and the Maritime AI/ML Digital Hub.
AWS unveiled AWS AI Spring, an initiative accelerating AI and genAI adoption in Singapore.
Focusing on public sector, enterprises, startups, communities, R&D, and workforce development, AWS inked a memorandum of intent with IMDA to create a program aiding local businesses in crafting genAI solutions using AWS’ AI, machine learning, and AI assistant services.
